Why Gottman Method Couples Therapy?

Students make up over half of our annual trainees, and we have a variety of great products and tools to help you succeed as you begin your journey with the Gottman Method! Throughout each level, participants learn proven assessment techniques and effective intervention strategies that will help them serve couples in their communities, all based on the popular research-backed Gottman Method.

University Outreach Program

Do you have a class, program, or group at your university or internship/practicum site that would benefit from learning Gottman Method Couples Therapy? The University Outreach Program (UOP) is designed to offer select Gottman Method Clinical Trainings and psychoeducational courses to graduate and doctoral-level students at a discounted rate. This program is also open to recent alumni that have graduated within two years.

Student Discounts

Students can gain access to training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy at just a fraction of the cost! Student groups of 5 or more are eligible for 50% off for Gottman Method Clinical Training Level 1, Level 2, Treating Affairs and Trauma, and the Bringing Baby Home Educator Training (on-demand) through the University Outreach Program!

Gottman 101: Gateway to Great Relationships COMING SOON!

The Gottman Institute is excited to announce a brand new, introductorty level course for undergraduate students. 

Based on over 50 years of research, Drs. John and Julie Gottman developed an approach that not only repairs troubled marriages and committed relationships, but also strengthens happy ones. Many of the key Gottman concepts and exercises that lead to successful romantic partnerships have been adapted to other relationships, including family and friendship dynamics.

Couples & Addiction Recovery Therapy Training image
Couples and Addiction Recovery Learn how to treat couples struggling with addiction and those in recovery from alcohol, drugs, and/or behavioral addictions. Help couples develop a recovery plan through increasing communication and understanding, establishing boundaries, and healing from the impact of addiction. This training requires completion of Level 1 Clinical Training.

Therapy Sessions: Live Observe how a master clinician uses the Gottman Method in practice with a real couple. Filmed live in Dr. Julie Gottman’s private practice office, these uncut sessions will teach you how to integrate key Gottman Method assessments and interventions into your own clinical work. Includes 10 full-hour clinical sessions demonstrating how to apply the Sound Relationship House to transform a destructive cycle into hope and healing. This training requires completion of Level 1 Clinical Training.
Emotion Coaching Students looking to work with children and parents would benefit from this training. Emotion Coaching helps you support parents and their children through life’s ups and downs in a way that builds confidence and promotes growth, both emotionally and intellectually. Learn the best ways to respond to different emotions, discover how to use them as opportunities for connection and teaching, and learn how to set clear, consistent limits while helping children problem-solve.

Therapy Tools for Students

Sign up for Gottman Connect to access a powerful digital platform, providing unparalleled clinical tools for application of the Gottman Method inside and outside of therapy. Students sign up as “Professionals,” and should upload their graduate-level, unofficial transcript to create an account. A license is not required.

Work towards Certification in Gottman Method Couples Therapy through a dedicated 2-year program to become a Certified Gottman Therapist.
